You’ve chosen a niche or direction for your brand and blogging business. What’s the next step?
You must take your niche idea and turn it into something tangible. As a blogger this means you must know how to build a website step by step. This is Step #2
Is it really possible to do it in minutes?
Yes, not a perfectly designed finished product, but it’s certainly possible to get something basic up and running which you can then develop further.
You might be thinking that building a website sounds scary and you’d be right if you were doing this a few years ago.
Back then you had to know all about coding which is a technical computer language, but today it’s a simple process because there are services and platforms that make it easy to create stylish and effective websites in a jiffy.
In fact, you can literally build a website in under 30 seconds. Sound impossible? Soon I’ll show you how you can this yourself.
Although building a basic website is easy, there are a few steps you must have in place before the final installation. Here’s the complete process step by step.
1. Choose a blogging platform
2. Choose and Buy a domain
3. Set up Website Hosting
4. Install Your Website
Step 1 – Choose a Blogging Platform
A blogging platform is the framework software that runs your website. This is also called a content management system. (CMS) While there are many blogging platforms from which to choose, the three main ones are WordPress, Drupal and Joomla.
WordPress is by far the largest and most popular, powering about 50% of all websites today. It’s also the best platform in my opinion. Here’s why I say this:
- It’s free, which means you can spend your hard-earned cash on something else!
- It’s beginner friendly which means it’s easy to install and set up.
- It’s easy to customize with thousands of design templates so you can get the exact look you want, and there are just as many plugins which are applications to help extend the functionality of your website.
- It’s powerful and trusted which means it’s reliable and can pretty much handle anything.
- There’s plenty of support available because so many people use it which means it’s easy to get help if and when you get stuck.
Here’s an additional article I wrote about choosing a blogging platform:
Since I use WordPress for all my websites and since I have recommended it to you, I’m assuming you will take my good advice and make the same choice.
Step 2 – Choose and Buy a Domain
Your website needs a name and an address so that others can find you online.
For example, this site’s name is Blogging Map and the domain is www.bloggingmap.com. As you can see, the name and domain are the same thing.
Choosing a name and a domain is exciting because it’s all part of establishing your blog as a brand. You want to choose something that aligns with your purpose and which is catchy, relevant, unique and easy to remember.
I won’t lie to you, making this choice can sometimes take a bit of time but it’s an important decision and one you should feel as sure about as you can.
For this reason I’ve written a separate article that lays out a process for you to follow to help you choose your name which you can read here:
Once you’ve chosen your name and you’re sure it’s available to buy, then you can make the purchase which means you’ll be the owner of your own web property.
Although I have bought domains from various providers in the past, now I only buy these through Wealthy Affiliate. You want to buy a domain name without getting ripped off so make sure that wherever you buy yours that you’ree getting the best deal for your needs.
Wealthy Affiliate is not an exclusive domain provider but a one stop business platform for Internet Marketers.
Selling domain names is just one of many services they offer. Personally I find this super convenient as everything is under one roof which means less expense and hassle.
Step 3 – Set up Website Hosting
Once you have a name, your website needs a home. Think of your domain as a mobile home and now you need somewhere to put it so you can be hooked up to the necessary facilities.
In the online world this is known as web hosting. Once again make sure that
A web hosting provider is a business that provides what’s needed for your website to be viewed on the Internet. This includes storage of your site files, all of which is stored on special computers called servers.
There many providers and there is a lot of competition. In fact, you’ll often see deals for as little as $5 – $9 per month. This is usually for one site and there are often limitations which at first may not seem that important but which may become so when your site grows.
For this reason I want to suggest that you do your due diligence when it comes to hosting and make sure you’re not only getting a good deal, but that you know how to get the best managed WordPress hosting for your money. Take care of this from the start and there will be less chance of running into issues later when your website grows, which after all is your plan, not so?
Again I have used a few different hosting companies before but now Wealthy Affiliate hosts all my websites for the same reasons I gave above.
Step 4 – Install Your Website
Hosting providers will give you all the tools required to install your website. Most will offer one click installation as a standard service. The steps to install your website will be similar and as follows:
- Log into your hosting back office, often called your ‘control panel’
- Click on “1 Click Installs”
- Click on the WordPress icon
- Choose the domain where you want to install your website. If you bought your domain name at a separate provider to your hosting company, you will have to first transfer your domain to your hosting company.
- Click the “Install Now” button and follow the instructions. When completed you’ll have access to your new WordPress website.
At this point you will have built a basic WordPress website and be ready to develop your site further.

How would you like to do all of the above in one place and build a new WordPress website in under 30 seconds?
You won’t even have to buy a domain. Wealthy Affiliate will give you a two free domains known as a sub domains so you can see how this works.
Please note I do not suggest you use free domains in the long term if you’re serious about blogging as sub domains do not come across as very professional. They are however fine for testing to see how you like the interface.
