Can anybody learn how to make money blogging online? Sure, and quite a lot of people do make a few dollars this way.
However, if you want to know how to make a living blogging, then that’s quite a different matter altogether.
Very few bloggers do, because they either don’t know how or they’re are unwilling to do what’s required.
Want to know the secret to how to make money blogging online so you can do it for a living? Keep reading…
The secret lies in being able to get your blog seen and read by enough people. In my opinion you should aim to get your blog to be one of the top 5 – 10% on the Internet.
Okay, so I know this may be a tall order, but unless you aim high you won’t push yourself. It’s just the way we’re wired as humans. 😉
What this means in day to day practical terms, is that you must know what to do to achieve your goal, and keep doing it until you’re successful.
It’s not for the flaky, lazy and impatient. But… if you have a vision and you’re serious about making it happen, it can be one of the most rewarding and lucrative ways to live your life.
How do you do it?
Here are 12 ways to help you get there:
1. Have a Burning Desire to blog
You must have raw, burning desire pumping through your veins!
You must want to be a blogger more than anything else in the world. I’m speaking about killer motivation and discipline to succeed, no matter what.
You must be able to see yourself as a successful, money earning blogger in the future, and believe you can do it. Others are doing it and so can you. Believe it!
You must want this so much that you’re prepared to go through the monotony and pain that is part of the journey to get there.
Sound like you? If not, don’t bother because you’ll never make it.
2. Define a Purpose around helping others
You must have a purpose that goes beyond dollars. Of course you want to make money, that’s what being in business is about, but this must be a secondary purpose. The money must come as a natural consequence of you achieving your primary purpose.
What you need is something to drive your forward when the money has not yet started to appear.
Having a purpose is about being other people oriented; it’s about helping someone else do something that will make you beam and glow when they achieve it. Inner fulfillment is what you’re really after.
Can you teach someone how to develop more confidence so they can transcend their perceived self limitations or show someone who has always been overweight, how to shed weight and change their lives?
Now you have a purpose.
3. serve your purpose in a Viable niche
Choose popular and competitive niches where people are prepared to spend money, BUT you must approach the niche in an uber-targeted way.
Take the subject of dating or relationships. It’s a popular niche. To be successful in this niche you’ll need to get far more specific.
A group of overly shy teenage guys who desperately want to know how to connect with girls so they can get more dates is an example of a targeted niche.
It’s targeted because it addresses a specific audience who have something in common and who want to know how to do something
4. make Your blog people oriented, not sales orienteD
Genuine blogging is about communicating with and helping people, first.
You cannot use blogging as a way to disguise ‘sales bashing’. If you do, people will see through this very quickly, believing that your primary purpose is to make a sale not help them solve a problem.
Yes, you want to make money as a blogger, but how you get there is not sales first… it’s people first.
Begin by attracting your targeted audience then work on growing a relationship with them via your blog. Help them and maybe, if they like and trust you enough they might buy something you’re promoting later.
5. give yourself plenty of time
Blogging is exciting because you literally create something out of nothing.
You start with the seed of an idea, and just like a plant seed, it must be planted, tended to and for the conditions to be right before it can start growing.
This takes time. The more time you have, the faster you’ll be able to develop your blog.
According to OrbitMedia, the average blog post takes 3 hours 16 minutes to write. Consider that when you start, you’ll need to write at least one blog post a day. Of course that’s not all you’ll need to do each day. Now you have an idea of the daily time investment you may have to make.
You also need time for the process of growth and understanding to occur as a blogger. This takes as long as it takes and it can’t be rushed. People who know how to make money blogging online understand it’s no ‘get rich quick’ solution.
6. You must have money to fund your blogging biz
You can blog as hobby without spending money but not if you want to make a living as a blogger. There’s a big difference between a hobby blog and one that’s designed to make maximum impact.
Fortunately the capital investment to get started and maintain your blogging business is really minimal compared with so many other business ventures, but it’s still a cost you must be prepared to service.
Like any business, it will take time before you start making enough money to pay yourself and cover your expenses.
Either you must have savings to use or you must start blogging while you’re still employed, which is what most bloggers do. This can even be a part time job so that you have more time for building your blogging business.
7. think and act like a business not a blogger
Not doing this, is one of the major reasons why those who want to know how to blog for money online don’t succeed.
You can’t just be a blogger, you must learn how to be in business, how to be entrepreneurial, how to temper fluctuating human emotions with consistent business logic. You need business systems and discipline to implement them.
It starts with creating a tailored business plan designed with blogging in mind, but this is only the beginning.
Your business plan must progress into a yearly, monthly, weekly and daily practical action plan. This must inform your every action towards the achievement of your goals.
8. get the best training you can afford
Blogging has been around for years and there’s plenty of free training available online. The question is how can you be sure it’s trusted and correct? How can you be sure it’s not outdated? How can you be sure it’s complete?
If you’re serious about knowing how to blog for a living, get the best training you can afford. Training that takes you step by step from the basics through to more advanced strategies. Training that shows you what’s working now.
Find reputable training that shows you not only how to blog but how to market what you have and how to be in business as a blogger.
9. use tools to make your job easier, saving you time
Most jobs require tools and blogging is no different. The less time you have to spend blogging, the more tools you’ll need.
Tools that automate time consuming tasks like research, social media marketing, and search engine optimization will be most useful.
It pays to learn what others are using and recommending so you don’t waste time and money on ‘shiny objects’ that don’t work or are unnecessary.
I suggest using a business platform that gives you access to most of what you’ll need in one place. From experience I know this to be a smart move since it offers value, convenience and efficiency.
10. get access to support for when you need it
Starting any major venture like a blogging business can feel daunting and lonely. Often friends, family and partners are not able to support you because they don’t understand what you’re doing.
Surround yourself with others who are doing the same thing as you. They will understand your frustrations and cheer you up on those days when you find yourself seriously wondering whether it’s worth continuing.
On another level, blogging requires a fair amount of technical expertise. As with all technology, it won’t always work. You’ll have questions and problems that need answers. Having access to reliable technical support will save you a lot of time and headaches.
11. create a blog that stands ouT
Not having a blog that stands out is another major reason why many bloggers don’t succeed.
Your blog MUST have a distinct personality of its own. This means you must create and develop a brand that distinguishes yours from all others.
This does not only mean choosing a font, colors and a logo. Your voice, values and unique perspective must shine through every piece of content you create as well as be conveyed by your design elements.
For many bloggers it takes time to develop this, but it’s the only way if you don’t want yours to fall into the ‘same as’ pile and disappear for good.
12. be persistent until you succeed
Getting your blog to be one of the top read websites online is no easy task. If it was, there would be a whole lot more success stories about and it would be even more crowded in the blogoshere.
The road to success is more than likely going to be longer than you envisaged and much of the early journey is as monotonous as can be.
The question is whether you have what it takes to last the distance? It takes sheer persistence, never giving up and doing whatever’s required for as long as it takes.
If you can keep your vision alive and fight to make it happen then you will succeed.
