When you want to know how to get somewhere, follow a map. When you want to know how to build something, follow a plan – same principle!
Whenever I’m about to take a journey I like to view the route in it’s entirety first, so I have the big picture in mind. Only then do I start at the beginning and follow step by step.
Let’s start with the big picture so you have an overall idea of what this is all about.
Now let’s look at each step in a bit more detail…
STEP 1 – IS BLOGGING THE BEST FIT FOR YOU?
Blogging’s not for everybody. It takes effort and time before you start seeing results. It makes sense that before you start, you make sure you understand what’s going to be required.
If you meet all the requirements you stand a far greater chance of being successful. Download my quick and easy ‘7 Essential Requirements to be a Successful Blogger Checklist’ to see if this is something you’re ready to take on.
STEP 2 – what’s your purpose?
Everybody goes into business to make money but you need a purpose bigger than this to keep you motivated and inspired to get up every day and do what you do.
Define your purpose as something beyond yourself and which is other people oriented.
Answer the following questions to help define your purpose.
- How can I help others?
- How can I make a difference in the lives of others?
- What’s my vision for others?
STEP 3 – create a game plan
You must approach blogging as a business. This means thinking and acting like a businessperson from the start.
You require a blogging specific business plan as well as an action plan detailing how you will achieve your goals monthly, weekly and daily. This is one area that wannabe professional bloggers often don’t put into practice with disastrous consequences.
The following blog posts deal with setting up your business the right way and making sure you plan your way to success.
STEP 4 – Get up to date training
Just as doctors, auto-mechanics and architects must learn and practice their skills to become successful, so must you as a professional blogger.
Training will play a major role in your life as a blogger so you must know where to find the best ongoing training you can afford.

Initially you need training to help you master four steps.
For more information on each, click the links below:
Step 1 – How to Choose a Blog Niche
Step 2 – How to Build a Website Step by Step
Step 4 – How to Earn Money From Your Website
You’ll also need ongoing training about how to blog effectively, how to use social media and how to incorporate other traffic strategies like video and email marketing.
STEP 5 – get the tools you need
Some of the tools professional bloggers use, include, a website builder, website hosting, keyword tool, writing software, social media schedulers, image and graphics design applications, blog theme, website health tools, search engine optimization tools etc.
There are some good free tools available and others that will incur a cost. Tools make your life easier as a blogger so keeping the cost down so you can have more tools to help you is a good idea.

STEP 6 – get the support you need
Because you are learning about something new and because learning results from making mistakes, you will have many technical questions along the way. It can take ages researching for answers on the Internet.
Even then you may not find the answers you need. I suggest finding communities of bloggers with whom you can network and you will be there to help you when you need it.
Having other people there to support you when you’re having a bad day is also very important.

STEP 7 – Commit to success
Your mindset will play a major role in whether you are able to stay the distance. You can read more about developing mind management habits here.
STEP 8 – achieve success
Earl Nightingale, the motivational American radio speaker said:
“All you need is the plan, the road map, and the courage to press on to your destination.”
